In this story told from his own point of view, Civil Servant Ivanovich tells the story of his love for his boss's daughter and his efforts to get information about her by receiving the letters of his boss's dog. The reason behind Ivanovich's strange behavior can be thought to be class discrimination. Ivanovich, who is dissatisfied with his life at the thought of his boss's daughter being married off to generals, becomes even more insane with this thought and drifts into an inner chaos. As he struggles with situations that are almost impossible to solve, he begins to see himself as the king of New Spain. Poor Ivanovich, who has a standard and ordinary life, is subjected to the brutal treatment of the mentally ill of the period and suffers a deep trauma in his mind.
